Well., Billy has performed well over the last week. Been on 2 "away
trips", neither were eventful. Bonus being, the battery has stayed charged
- downside being, the forks are definitely chucking it out.
I painted the stays and re-fitted the leg shields - ugly as a bag of spanners,
but they are original, and they were with the bike when I got it. The bearings
and seals for the crankshaft & gearbox in the original engine rebuild are
looking terribly expensive (quoted £88.00, $125USD). Estimates of fuel
consumption rests at about 90 m.p.g. Today I tried to push the bike past
50m.p.h. but it wont do it, plenty of more throttle and carb noise - just no
more speed.... have to investigate... Hmmm, the leg shields are amplifying the
already noisy engine... minor annoyance.
The jumping out of 2nd is a real chore... shall I do a hasty strip just to fix
it? and spread the rebuild of the original engine over the winter considering
how much the bits are working out to?
I found an old, but unused gasket set in my "bantam pile" - so I
intend to scan all the gaskets and keep them on file on the PC. Then I can just
print new gaskets onto gasket paper... kewl idea?
